I am being taken me underneath and into the substructure of  The Royal Festival hall. It’s  a storytellers series of giganormous Concrete Caves beneath the structure above.

As Becky Shaw unlocks the doors a chill rushes out and the detritus of the entire structure raise a collective eyebrow   as if resting actors waiting for the call, hearing the door open, again.  It must look like this  back stage of a doctor who set. All these dark materials, hundreds of perfect wooden stacked chairs draped in plastic, beautiful fifteen foot stacks of wood. In a corner a festering hill of thick wires taller than myself, like a shoal of eels. It’s magical in here. And there is my desk, sat waiting to be discovered.  “I thought you’d never arrive” she says confidently.   I choose the desk. Soon there’ll be a phone and there’ll be a computer and I will be set and ready to go with a base at - The Riverside Rooms, which are beside the QEH.

At 2.30pm I attend my first ever literature meeting. It’s a pleasure to be included by and makes me feel part of a process, though I am Artist in residence rather than writer in residence. The distinction is important. Artist in residence means that I am cross platforming (I made that term up) but in that I work in all forms it’s perfect for me.  It's no suprise that I have affinity with  the literature department nor that I expected a warm reception there. It's all good.

It is a creative and enjoyable meeting. I learn a lot and share a lot.  Just how i like it.   First news:   A new Head of Literature has been appointed. Her name is Rachel Holmes .  After doing a bit of research Holmes is clearly a dynamic and invigorating appointment. She is a writer, and academic too. Her last book came out in March 2007.  There's the  diamond. Not sure about the details as to when Rachel is starting but I will keep you informed.

It’s a good, good,  day.  Sunshine splashes off the thames and soaks us all in light.  I meet Geraldine Collinge at EAT which is fastly becoming an  ideal meeting place.   Gerladine is exec producer at  Apples and Snakes  an organisation interested in promoting performance poetry.  I receive a call from Fiona Sampson, the editor for Poetry Review who has asked me to write an article for Poetry Review – deadline Mid October. 6pm I’m on my bike and skating back across the water to a photography launch at The Photographers gallery to see this exhibition by the Emperor of Ethiopia’s photographer whom I’d interviewed for The BBC World Service this previous saturday. Information on that is in my own blog.  http://blog.lemnsissay.com . Love this building.
